Guatemala, Food 4 Farmers – 2019
In 2019, I traveled with the NGO, Food 4 Farmers, to visit our cooperative partners in Guatemala. Food 4 Farmers partners with coffee-farming communities in Latin America to cultivate a food-secure future. Their partners represent 8,000 coffee-farming families working to put good, healthy food on the table every day. You can donate here on the Food 4 Farmers website.
Plants in Captivity – 2010-2015
While biking around one evening in Germany, I spied a lonely little plant in the window of a 6-story office building. It was dark, it was rainy and the plant seemed to stare forlornly out the window. As I traveled around, I saw many more plants, pushing toward the light of windows, struggling to survive indoors, stuck in a manufactured environment and just scraping by. So I made some photos, which seemed beautiful and cruel and exploitative.
Coffee & Ethiopia – 2012
In 2012, I accompanied the editors of Barista Magazine and Bean There Coffee on a visit to the Sidama region of Ethiopia. We met with Fairtrade certified coffee farmers and cooperative managers to learn about how Fairtrade has improved conditions in the region and their businesses. We also visited Tesfaye Bekele of the Suke Quto farm.
